OK, OK. SO WHAT ARE THE RATES?
California: surf, beaches, Hollywood, surf, national parks, surf, San Diego Zoo, redwoods. Oh, yeah... and the lowest intrastate long distance rates in the nation.

Before we discuss intrastate calls, we need to review interstate calls.

Interstate (between states) rates vary by carrier but with few exceptions (Alaska and Hawaii) when a telephone carrier quotes a 9.9 cents per minute rate, it is good for all states. It doesn't matter if you are in Florida, California or Texas, the interstate rate is the same.

However, this same logic does not apply to intrastate (long distance calls within your state) calling. Intrastate rates vary widely (!!!!) by state. Please note that with many carriers, it is cheaper to call across the country, than across the state. It doesn't make sense, but that is the way it is (I don't think the Shell Answer Man, Mr. Peabody or a MENSA member even knows the reason why).
