WHAT
IS THE SCOOP ON LEC's & CLEC's?
I can shop for my long
distance carrier, but why can't I select a local Bell?
(If only ______ (fill in the blank, NYNEX,
GTE, US West, Pacific Bell, Bell South, Southwestern Bell, Bell Atlantic...) had some
competition I would get better pricing and service.)
JUST WHAT IS LOCAL
DIALING?
The same way that there was once just AT&T, and then MCI, then Sprint, then 100's of
companies offering long distance service, is happening in the local phone market as well.
In many areas you now have a choice as to who you want for local service. The local phone
service market is made available by what used to be Bell Telephone and was divided up into
Regional Bell Operating Companies, also called RBOC's. Each individual Bell company is
also referred to as a Local Exchange Carrier, also known as a LEC.
Finally, the LEC's are having competition enter, and yet another term was created,
CLEC,
the Competitive Local Exchange Carrier. And as if that wasn't good enough, someone thought
the term ALEC, might work as well, Alternative Local Exchange Carrier.
The long and short of it, is that competition is here.
WHAT IS THE "BELL" COMPETITION SAYING?
An excerpt from one of the CLEC's:
>> For the first time ever, you have a reliable alternative in local telephone
service. What's more, you can now obtain local, long distance, and Internet service from a
single phone company. And perhaps best of all, both of these firsts are available at lower
prices and with an unprecedented level of customer satisfaction that makes it a pleasure
doing business with the phone company.
Tailored to the needs of small- to medium-sized businesses, we offer:
* Local calling, long distance, and Internet access services from one convenient source.
* The assistance of people totally committed to making your job simpler, your costs lower,
and your business stronger.
* One, easy-to-understand monthly statement for everything.
* High quality service and features that you can rely on every hour of every day.
* The performance and reliability of a national local switched network, featuring Wireless
Fiber service, which provides fiber-optic quality without fiber-optic lines.
We carefully chose our service offerings to complement each other. The result is a
complete resource that can supply businesses with as many or as few services as they
require. There's no reason to shop around in order to piece together a solution. We does
it all. Quickly. Simply. Reliably. And, of course, at a lower cost. <<
HOW DO I GET MY LOCAL DIAL TONE?
For the most part the CLEC service is only available in certain areas and generally to
businesses spending at least $500 to $1,000 per month, but there are savings. Residential
options are being offered in some areas, especially in California and other large markets.
SO HOW CAN WE HELP YOU?
If you have a business, we can determine if you are in a currently served area and present
rates to you for your analysis.
If you are a residential user,
well, there are some options available, but for the most part, they are few and far
between...
