10220: DOES IT REALLY SAVE MONEY?
(You have seen the 10220 ads… you've used the 1010 code, but did you really save??) 10-10-220 offers a $0.99 rate for all calls under 20 minutes and then 7 cents per minute after that. Pretty simple, however, there is a catch. 

If you call and get an answering machine with 1010220 and hang up, it costs you $0.99 for that one minute call. If you call and make a 10 minute call, it costs you 10 cents a minute. If you use 10-10-220 for 40 minutes, then the average cost per minute is 7.5 cents per minute. It is ONLY 5 cents a minute at exactly 20 minutes... At ALL other times it is higher!!.

HOW DO THOSE 10-220 DIAL AROUND PLANS WORK? 
The answer, well, yes, maybe, sort of, and no. The 1010220 commercials ask you to re-route your call over their long distance network, instead of using your primary long distance carrier. By doing so, you are charged at the assigned rates of the carrier's code you dialed, NOT the rates of your primary long distance carrier.

This is both good and bad news: if you currently pay more than 4-8 cents a minute from your long distance carrier then by using a dial around code to re-route your call, you save money on your long distance calling.
